Dried Flowers

The Revival of Dried Flowers: Beauty That Lasts

At Upper Village Blooms, we’ve fallen in love with the quiet, elegant charm of dried flowers. Gone are the days when they conjured images of dusty wheat stalks and '70s macramé. Today, dried botanicals are having a renaissance—bringing texture, longevity, and an earthy sophistication to our homes.

There’s so much to appreciate about dried flowers. For starters, they’re super low-maintenance—no watering, no wilting. They're also a sustainable and economical way to extend the life of fresh blooms. Whether they came from your florist, your garden, or even a special bouquet, flowers can be repurposed into long-lasting arrangements, wreaths, and wall accents.

At our Croton-on-Hudson shop, we dry many of our own flowers using several time-tested methods. Some blooms dry beautifully just by hanging upside down in a cool, dry space. Others need a little more care and do best preserved with silica or sand to maintain their color and structure. Through a lot of experimentation (and a little trial and error), we’ve discovered some of the most reliable flowers to dry include limonium, statice, strawflowers, roses, amaranthus, mini-carnations, mimosa, and kangaroo paws.

When it comes to styling dried arrangements, the possibilities are endless. A few stems in an heirloom bud vase or a cherished piece of pottery can make a big statement. Sturdy, slim varieties like bunny tails, phalaris, ruscus, and setaria are perfect for this minimalist approach.

Stagnant energy in dried flowers? Don't know her! Try staggering your blooms at different heights and angles to give your design energy and flow. Use gestural stems to reach outward from your main cluster, adding a sense of vitality and direction. For wider containers, we recommend using dried gypsophila or statice as a filler to provide shape and structure.

A final tip: opt for an opaque vase to conceal the dried stems and the “confetti” that naturally settles at the bottom. Or gather your bouquet with twine or raffia and hang it upside down for a lovely wall accent.
